MRCA Signatory Contractors Labor Relations Conference

Doubletree Hilton Hotel - Chesterfield, MO (St. Louis Area)

The purpose of this conference is to assist MRCA Members that are signatory with craft unions with their labor contract negotiations and labor contract administration; to provide an overview of basic labor law and ERISA Fringe Benefit Law; and to learn how to better work with their labor partners.

We are going to be concentrating at this session on labor agreements with the Local Unions of the International Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Trades. We know that many of you are signatory to other craft unions, but at this first conference, we thought we should concentrate on the primary union that you all deal with.

This education is for management representative of signatory firms so we have not invited any union representatives to the conference.  However, we will be discussing many of the initiatives being provided by the International Union in the areas of training and recruitment.  If there is interest in continuing to hold these conferences in the future, we will certainly reach out to the Union for a labor-management forum as a part of the program.

The Schedule of Events is as follows:

August 18th

3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  1. Presentation by Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service on how they can assist in a negotiations and educational programs they have to offer.

  2. MRCA will be gathering reference wording for various contract clauses and wage comparison information from across the Midwest region.

  3. An open forum discussion of the participants as to the various programs and contract wording that have been successful in your area.

  4. Mike & Mike: On the Fringe – special update on ARPA Pension Relief

5:00 p.m. – Reception

6:00 p.m. – Dinner

August 19th

7:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Attorney, Amy Mitchell of the Legal Firm of Auman Mahan and Furry, will take the morning to review basic labor law; preparation for bargaining; and bargaining structures.  In addition, she will speak about ERISA and management’s obligation to be a part of the operation of joint funds such as pension, health and welfare, and Apprenticeship Committees.

We will leave plenty of time for Q&A as well.

The registration is $245 per person.  Just a reminder, that if you have an industry fund in your labor agreement, registration, travel, and hotel to a session like this are legitimate expenses to be incurred by an Industry Fund in general, but check your specific local industry fund by-laws or trust.
