The old saying, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” is certainly true in the roofing industry. Most bids that are substantially lower than other bids are often given by contractors that may be uninsured or do not perform the highest quality work. Compare quality work experience and professionalism as well as the proposed cost.

Choosing the right contractor

Purchasing a new roof can be an investment of both time and money. The best way to evaluate your particular need is to work with a professional roofing contractor.

Before you start, you should:
  • Call your local Better Business Bureau or appropriate regulation department to check for possible complaints against the contractor.
  • Review the roofing warranty and watch for provisions that may void it.
  • Ask the contractor about his safety program. Insist that industry safety procedures are in place.
The contractor you select should:
  • Have a permanent place of business including a telephone number, tax identification number and depending upon your location, a business license.
  • Maintain insurance and workers' compensation. Make sure coverage is in effect through the duration of the job. Don't be shy about asking for proof of coverage.
  • Be licensed and bonded - requirements vary by state.
  • Provide client references. Call past customers to find out how their project went.
  • Provide you with a written proposal, including the scope of work and specifications, a projected start/completion date and payment requirements.
  • Provide you with a copy of the roofing warranty. Look for any provisions that would void the warranty.
  • Belong to MRCA and their local or national association. Being a member of an industry association demonstrates a commitment to professionalism.
