CANTON, Mass. — Sika Sarnafil, a leading manufacturer of thermoplastic roofing and waterproofing systems, announced the winners of its 2007 Projects of the Year Competition. Twelve contractors were recognized for outstanding workmanship in completing a recent project utilizing a Sika Sarnafil thermoplastic membrane for roofing or waterproofing applications. A winner and two finalists were chosen from each of four different categories — Steep Slope, Low Slope, Waterproofing, and Sustainability. Nearly 30 contractors submitted projects for evaluation in the annual competition. Entries were judged on project complexity, design uniqueness, project importance, craftsmanship, and creative problem solving. First place winners were awarded cash prizes and all finalists were presented with handsome recognition pieces.
First place in the Steep Slope category was Midland Engineering Company of South Bend, Ind., for their work on a truly unique and challenging high-rise condominium complex, The Ascent at Roebling’s Bridge. This newly constructed facility, located in Covington, Ky., just across the river from Cincinnati, featured an average slope of 9 inches by 12 inches at heights ranging from 150 feet to 300 feet. Second place in this grouping was Allied Restoration Corporation of East Hartford, Conn. Third place went to Pfister Maintenance Inc., of Paterson, N.J.
In the Low Slope category, DRI Commercial of Irvine, Calif., was awarded first place for their efforts on the St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, Calif. DRI Commercial installed some 170,000-square feet of Sika Sarnafil’s highly reflective, energy-efficient EnergySmart Roof® membrane — reroofing the entire facility without greatly impacting the hospital population.
Interstate Roofing and Waterproofing Inc. of Onalaska, Wis., was the second place finisher. Commonwealth Building Systems LLC of Rockland, Mass. took third.
Prospect Waterproofing Company of Sterling, Va., took first place in the Waterproofing class for their work at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Janelia Farms, in Ashburn, Va. The company installed more than 225,000 square feet of membrane as a base for an innovative, ecologically effective series of green roofs designed to hold vegetation and plant coverings. Second place went to F.J.A. Christiansen Roofing Company Inc., of Milwaukee, Wis. And third place was KPost Company of Dallas, Texas.
In a Sustainability category, Solar Integrated Technologies Inc., of Los Angeles, Calif. was the inaugural victor for completing the largest Building Integrated Photovoltaic system in the world — the roofing system for the Tesco Fresh and Easy Market cold and freezer storage facility in Riverside, Calif. Solar Integrated Technology installed more than 650,000 square feet of membrane with energy-creating photovoltaic panels integrated directly within the Sika Sarnafil roofing material.
